Midwestern Garden and Design Symposium

Hudson Heritage Association joins a unique collaboration of Akron area organizations in support of The Midwestern Garden History and Design Symposium entitled “Fields and Forests. Farms and Gardens,” June 21-22. The event will begin with a full day at the Akron Art Museum, Stay Hywet Hall and Gardens, and Hale Farm and Village featuring a variety of speakers and tours. Keynote speaker Ms. Marta McDowell, author of All the President’s Gardens, will emphasize the importance of research and documentation of period landscapes using the research methods for the White House Gardens and their history as examples.

HHA is pleased to host the symposium in Hudson on June 22. Inga Walker of Hudson Heritage Association and Leianne Heppner of The Summit County Historical Society will provide a Trolley Tour of Hudson Village, narrated by Mr. Tom Vince, Archivist for Western Reserve Academy. A box lunch social on the Village Green will be followed by a walking tour of Western Reserve Academy, to include the Observatory, Chapel, David Hudson House, and President’s House.

HHA has teamed up with the Akron Art Museum, Akron Garden Club Summit County Historical Society, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, the City of Akron, the Cuyahoga Valley Countryside Conservancy, Cascade Locks Association, Hower House, Hale Farm and Village and the Akron Community Foundation. Acting in concert, the groups are creating an educational opportunity highlighting the unique characteristics of our Midwest landscapes, the evolution of its farms and the design elements of its gardens. The Symposium will share the concepts of preservation, maintenance, interpretation and visibility/visitation of historic properties.
