Dennis J. Joyce House

Bands of scalloped siding on the side aspects and spindle work trim on the full facade front porch are typical Queen Anne style, also known as American Victorian. The foundation is tooled sandstone. There was another house on this site, owned by Hannah Hurn Holmes until she passed away in 1888. Dennis Joyce bought the property and razed the original house for his new dwelling. The date of construction is written on the wall above the mantel in the house. There was a flurry of construction on this block of Church Street at this time.

Joyce was a successful businessman, and the elaborate detailing in his house shows evidence of his prosperity. He was a storekeeper and competitor of Charles Buss. Legend has it that they even competed to see who could build a grander house. Tax records indicate that Buss won with a higher valuation. Joyce and his wife, Mary Hild, raised three daughters, and he lived in the house until his death in 1943.
