Isabell Hill House

Built in 1895, the history of the house at 16 College Street is closely tied to that of the home next door at 48 Church Street as the lots for the two homes once were part of one parcel of land. The home at 48 Church St was likely built by Frederick W. Bunnell in 1853 on land formerly owned by Heman Oviatt but deeded to Western Reserve College. Research connects the house at 16 College to six different families who have lived in the home during the past 130 years.
The structure is believed to be one of a handful of “Cheese Factory Houses” located in the Historic District – so named because they were built to house workers at nearby cheese manufacturing facilities, a prominent industry in Hudson during the 1870s and 1880s. The original footprint has been expanded over time, but many original details have been preserved including the foundation, framing and flooring. During the 20th century, multiple additions were built and interior components were updated.
